SIBU: Sarawak’s younger generation should aspire to become entrepreneurs who create jobs rather than simply seek employment.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the traditional mindset of pursuing government jobs after graduation must evolve to meet the demands of a rapidly changing economy.
“I think the first thing we need to change is our mindset. For many years, people believed that after completing their studies, the ideal career was to work for the government and that has been the traditional way of thinking,” he said during a special town hall dialogue held in conjunction with the Sarawak Day 2026 celebration today (July 22).
Abang Johari pointed out that a nation’s prosperity depends on the strength of its economy and its ability to generate new opportunities thus making entrepreneurship increasingly important in the years ahead.
He said the global economy is undergoing another major transformation as countries transition towards cleaner energy and new industries, creating opportunities for those prepared to innovate.
He also said Sarawak’s role is not merely to keep pace with these changes, but to position itself as a participant in emerging sectors by equipping its people with the necessary expertise.
“The real challenge now is ensuring that our people have the knowledge and expertise to take advantage of these opportunities,” he said.
Abang Johari said the state’s free tertiary education initiative reflects that commitment by preparing students in disciplines that will support future industries and economic growth.
He encouraged young Sarawakians to think beyond conventional career paths and have the confidence to build businesses capable of competing internationally.
“If our young people master these technologies, they will not merely become employees—they can become creators of entirely new industries,” he said.
Abang Johari added that the state government would continue creating opportunities for young people to realise their ambitions, expressing confidence that they would one day shape Sarawak’s next chapter of development.
