MIRI: A 39-year-old local man has been fined RM3,500 by the Magistrate’s Court here after pleading guilty to a charge of criminal intimidation for threatening the safety of staff and children at a kindergarten in Bekenu.
The accused admitted to an offence under Section 506 of the Penal Code, following an incident on Jul 3 at about 7.45am.
According to the case facts, the man went to a kindergarten where his former wife was present and demanded that she hand over her mobile phone.
When she refused, he allegedly threatened that the staff and children at the premises “would not be safe” and warned that he would continue to harass them.
Fearing for her own safety, as well as the safety of those at the kindergarten, the woman lodged a police report, prompting an investigation.
The court imposed a fine of RM3,500 after the accused entered a guilty plea.
Miri district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah reminded the public that criminal intimidation is a serious offence and urged people to resolve disputes through lawful means rather than resorting to threats or intimidation.
“Any act of threatening another person in a manner that causes fear for their safety is a criminal offence and will be dealt with firmly under the law,” he said.
