MIRI: Mercure Miri City Centre and Riam Institute of Technology (RiamTec) have formalised a strategic partnership aimed at producing industry-ready hospitality professionals through structured training, knowledge sharing and closer collaboration between academia and industry.
The partnership was sealed with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) last Wednesday (Jul 22), reaffirming both organisations’ commitment to developing skilled talent for Sarawak’s growing tourism and hospitality sector.
Under the collaboration, RiamTec students will undergo structured On-the-Job Training (OJT) at Mercure Miri City Centre, allowing them to gain practical experience in hotel operations while complementing their classroom learning.
Beyond internship placements, the partnership will also focus on curriculum enhancement, industry engagement, knowledge exchange and the integration of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles into practical learning.
Mercure Miri City Centre General Manager Shan Ravendran said the collaboration goes beyond providing internship opportunities.
“Nurturing local talent and bridging classroom learning with real-world operations is vital to building a resilient tourism ecosystem in Sarawak.
“By hosting students, sharing industry expertise, supporting curriculum development and embedding ESG principles into practical learning, we are empowering Miri’s next generation of hospitality leaders,” he said.
Following the MoU signing, Mercure Miri City Centre’s People and Culture Executive, Calvin Tumy, conducted an On-the-Job Training briefing for RiamTec students.
The session introduced students to workplace expectations, professional etiquette and the essential skills required to succeed in the hospitality industry.
It also provided practical guidance on maximising internship opportunities and preparing for future careers.
During the ceremony, Tumy also received a Certificate of Appreciation from RiamTec in recognition of his presentation titled ‘Preparing for On-the-Job Training (OJT)’.
The partnership reflects the shared commitment of Mercure Miri City Centre and RiamTec to develop a future-ready workforce capable of supporting the continued growth and sustainability of Sarawak’s tourism and hospitality industry.
Mercure Miri City Centre is an internationally branded hotel under Accor, offering accommodation, dining and event facilities in the heart of Miri.
