MARUDI: The Baram Regatta, long regarded as the centrepiece of such competitions in Sarawak, also stands out as an event that brings people together in a big way.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said it was a symbol of Sarawak’s enduring unity.
Describing the event as the “mother of all regattas” in Sarawak, he said the annual celebration was more than a traditional boat race, but a historic platform that reflects the state’s unique multicultural identity and peaceful coexistence.
He said the Baram Regatta holds a special place in Sarawak’s history because it represents the convergence of the state’s diverse cultures.
“The unique thing about the Baram Regatta is that it is a convergence of cultures. Different cultures come together and move to the same rhythm. Although the lyrics may be different, we all move in one direction to unite our multi-racial and multi-religious society,” he said.
“This is a very historic event in Sarawak’s history – the mother of all regattas, the Baram Regatta.
“I thank all of you for the warm reception today. We have Iban, Orang Ulu, Chinese, Malays and many other communities gathered here. I thank all of you,” he said at the launching ceremony of the Baram Regatta at Dataran Marudi here today.
Abang Johari called on Sarawakians to continue safeguarding the peace and harmony that have long defined the state, regardless of religious beliefs.
“Whatever religion we profess, in the end we all pray to Almighty God. Let us continue to preserve the peace we enjoy in Sarawak.
“It is because we have peace that we can organise events like this. If there is chaos, it would not be possible. Organising a regatta is not inexpensive, but we do it together and share it with the people,” he said.
He said the Sarawak government’s development agenda would continue to be anchored on unity, with equal emphasis on economic growth, social development and welfare programmes that benefit all communities.
“We will continue moving in one direction in developing our economy, strengthening our social development and providing the necessary social support for the people,” he added.
