KUCHING: The growing success of the Saribas International MTB Jamboree has prompted plans to expand homestay accommodation in Debak to meet rising visitor demand while boosting the local economy.
Saribas assemblyman Datuk Dr Mohamad Razi Sitam said the increasing popularity of the annual mountain biking event has highlighted the need for more accommodation, with existing homestays unable to cope with demand.
He said more villagers and longhouse residents are being encouraged to venture into the homestay business as an additional source of income.
“Our homestays have increased over the years, but they are still not enough. We want to encourage more villagers and longhouse communities to open homestays,” he told Sarawak Tribune when met recently.
Razi, who is also Deputy Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, said a homestay training programme will be held soon in collaboration with the Debak District Office and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) to encourage more participation while improving the quality of existing operators.
He said the initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen Debak’s readiness to host more sporting events and visitors in the future.
According to Razi, surveys have shown that some homestay operators are earning between RM3,000 and RM5,000 a month, making it a viable source of supplementary income for local families.
“This is one of the sectors that should continue to be developed. Besides local programmes, many government departments also choose Debak as a venue because of the available facilities, including comfortable halls and suitable locations for extreme sports,” he said.
He added that Debak hosts sporting and community programmes almost every month, attracting visitors from within and outside the area while creating business opportunities for small traders and entrepreneurs.
Razi said positive feedback from participants has also encouraged organisers to further improve future editions of the Saribas International MTB Jamboree based on suggestions received from riders and the public.
He expressed confidence that continued improvements to the event and supporting infrastructure would further enhance Debak’s reputation as a sports tourism destination while generating greater economic benefits for the local community.
