CANBERRA: An urgent search is underway for a missing baby after a woman and a child were found dead in the ocean off the coast of South Australia (SA) on Monday, reported Xinhua.
The bodies of the 36-year-old woman and her toddler were initially spotted by a police officer who was responding to reports of a car with its engine running at a clifftop car park on SA’s south-east coast on Monday morning.
They were retrieved by emergency services with the help of local fishermen, and a search by land, sea and air was launched for the missing baby.
The search was suspended on Monday night and resumed on Tuesday.
“We do hold grave concerns. The child is less than one year old, and in any conditions that would cause great concern about the child’s ability to survive,” SA Police Superintendent Trent Cox told reporters on Monday night.
“We’re keeping an open mind about everything, but I don’t hold out great hope.”
He said police were building a picture of the woman’s movements on Monday morning and how she and the deceased toddler came to be in the water. – BERNAMA-XINHUA
