KUCHING: Sarawak’s rhythmic gymnastics squad enjoyed a memorable outing at the Futian Cup Rhythmic Gymnastics Elite International Competition 2026, with its athletes winning numerous gold, silver and bronze medals against an international field of competitors.
Leading the charge was Nichelle Kung Tze Xuan, who dominated the Under-15 Professional category by sweeping all five titles on offer. She clinched gold medals in the freehand, hoop, clubs and ribbon events before capping off her flawless campaign with the individual all-around gold medal.
In the Under-14 Professional category, Shirley Chia Xin Shuen emerged as another standout performer, securing the individual all-around gold after winning three apparatus titles in the ball, clubs and ribbon events. She also added a silver medal in the hoop event to complete an exceptional performance.
Teammate Clarissa Makena Ambok Joseph Chaong also impressed in the same category, claiming gold in the freehand event, silver in clubs, and bronze medals in both the hoop and ball events. Her consistency throughout the competition earned her the individual all-around silver medal.
Meanwhile, Lyna Kho Li Xiang contributed another podium finish for Sarawak by taking silver in the freehand event. She also finished fourth in the ball event, fifth in both the ribbon event and individual all-around standings, and sixth in the clubs event.
Competing in the Under-12 Professional category, Eliza Toh Ryui Ya delivered a commendable performance by winning bronze medals in both the freehand and clubs events. She also placed 12th in the ribbon event and finished sixth overall in the individual all-around standings.
The impressive medal haul at the competition, held in China from July 15 to 21, reflects the steady progress of Sarawak’s rhythmic gymnastics programme, with the state’s young athletes continuing to prove their ability to compete and excel against strong international opposition.
