BETONG: Digital literacy and proficiency in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) must continue to be strengthened among the younger generation.
This is essential to produce a highly skilled workforce capable of meeting the needs of Sarawak’s development and digital economy.
Betong Member of Parliament Datuk Dr Richard Rapu said students should make full use of the educational opportunities available today to enhance their knowledge, skills and competitiveness in preparation for the future workforce.
“The peace we enjoy today allows our children to study in a comfortable environment.
“Make the most of this opportunity by studying hard and pursuing your dreams, because education is the key to success,” he said as reported by UKAS yesterday (July 28).
He said this while officiating the PENTARAMA Homecoming Programme in conjunction with the Sarawak Day Celebration, as well as the Program Jiwa @ National Day and Malaysia Day Celebration for the Betong District, held at SJKC Chung Hua Betong yesterday (July 28).
Dr Richard stressed that Sarawak requires more highly skilled workers, particularly in STEM-related fields, to support the state’s emerging economy, and he encouraged students to continuously improve their knowledge and skills to seize future employment opportunities.
He added that rapid digital technological advancement also requires the younger generation to become ethical, critical and responsible internet users by verifying the authenticity of information before believing or sharing it.
At the same time, he said the celebrations of Sarawak Day, National Day and Malaysia Day should serve as platforms to instil patriotism, strengthen unity and appreciate the peace that forms the foundation of the state’s and nation’s development.
The programme, organised by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Kuching Branch in collaboration with the Sarawak Information Department and the Betong District Information Office, aims to raise awareness of digital literacy, disseminate government information and foster patriotism among the younger generation.
The event also featured the launch of the PENTARAMA Homecoming Programme in conjunction with the Sarawak Day Celebration and the Program Jiwa @ National Day and Malaysia Day Celebration for the Betong District, highlighted by chants of “I Love Sarawak”, “I Love Malaysia”, “Study Hard” and “Great Betong, Progressive Sarawak” together with the students.
