KUCHING: Four draft customary law review proposals have been submitted to the Sarawak Attorney General’s Chambers for review.
The matter was conveyed to State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki during a courtesy call by Sarawak Council for Customs and Traditions (MAIS) head Datuk Dr Neilson Ilan Mersat at Wisma Bapa Malaysia recently.
The four draft reviews cover the Iban Customary Law, Bidayuh Customary Law, Kayan Customary Law (Adet Kayan), and Kenyah Customary Law (Adet Kenyah).
The initiative forms part of its efforts to modernise the customary law system through reinterpretation, enhancements and the introduction of new provisions to ensure that customary laws remain relevant to the increasingly dynamic and modern way of life.
The effort also reflects the Sarawak government’s continued commitment to preserving the customary heritage of the state’s diverse communities while ensuring its implementation remains practical and suited to current needs.
During the meeting, Abu Bakar also congratulated Ilan on his appointment for the 2026–2029 term.
