LAWAS: An unemployed man has been arrested for allegedly exposing himself to a group of female students at a madrasah, in what police are investigating as a non-physical sexual offence against children.
The 49-year-old was arrested after a teacher lodged a police report at 1.20 pm last Saturday over the incident, which allegedly took place on July 21.
Lawas police chief DSP Liong Tindan said the teacher had been informed by the family of one of the students that an unidentified man had exposed his genitals to several female students while they were resting outside the madrasah during the midday break.
“Acting on information, police tracked down and arrested the suspect, who was found in front of the same madrasah.
“Background checks found the suspect has no prior criminal record,” he said.
Liong stated that the case is being investigated under Section 15(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
Upon conviction, the offence carries a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM20,000, or both.
In a separate case, narcotics police also arrested an unemployed man and seized 6.20 grammes of suspected methamphetamine during an operation along Jalan Trusan on Sunday.
He added that the suspect was detained while inside a car parked by the roadside.
Further checks led to the discovery of a cigarette box containing a plastic packet with crystalline substance believed to be methamphetamine, weighing an estimated 6.20 grammes.
The suspect tested negative for drugs, while background checks found he had no prior criminal record.
The case is being investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
