KUCHING: Two community associations will host an Anti-Scam Awareness Talk next month to help the public recognise the latest scam tactics amid the rising number of scam cases.
The programme, jointly organised by the Persatuan Foochow Padawan Kuching and Persatuan Masyarakat Kawasan Simpang Tiga Kuching, will be held on August 23.
A formal invitation was presented to Kuching Police Chief, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, on Tuesday (Jul 28), requesting the police to share the latest scam trends and fraud prevention measures.
Kota Sentosa assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Sau Sin, said scam cases have become increasingly rampant, with reports appearing almost daily in newspapers and online media.
“The two associations decided to organise this awareness talk in response to the alarming increase in scam cases.
“We hope the police’s professional sharing will help the public better understand the various scam tactics and strengthen their ability to identify and avoid fraudulent schemes,” he said.
Yap said the police had also informed them that scam reports are received almost every day, highlighting the need to strengthen anti-scam education.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of both Persatuan Foowchow Padawan Kuching and Persatuan Masyarakat Kawasan Simpang Tiga Kuching, Kapitan Datuk Lau Sie Lok, said scam syndicates are constantly evolving their tactics, making people of all ages, including youths, working adults and senior citizens, potential targets.
He said the talk aims to equip participants with practical knowledge and among the topics to be covered are telephone scams, online investment scams, romance scams, impersonation scams involving government agencies, and online shopping scams.
Participants will also learn practical ways to respond to suspicious situations, increase their vigilance and safeguard their own and their families’ financial security.
