GLASGOW, Scotland: Malaysia surpassed their target of five gold medals on the sixth day of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after national weightlifter, Mohamad Syahmi Nor Ghazali, delivered the country’s sixth gold in the men’s 94-kilogramme (kg) event on Wednesday (July 29).
Syahmi continued Malaysia’s outstanding dominance in weightlifting by winning the title at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) Armadillo with a combined lift of 347kg.
He finished just one kilogramme ahead of Canada’s Alex Bellemarre, who claimed silver with 346kg, while Australia’s Oliver Riley Saxton took bronze with 336kg.
Syahmi’s triumph means Malaysia’s weightlifting team have contributed five of the country’s six gold medals so far, following victories by Mohamad Aniq Kasdan, Muhammad Aznil Bidin, Muhammad Erry Hidayat, and Muhammad Hafizuddin Ruslin.
Malaysia’s other gold medal was won by national para long jump star, Datuk Abdul Latif Romly, in the men’s T20 event, while the country’s two silver medals came through Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple in the men’s lawn bowls singles and the women’s pairs combination of Aleena Ahmad Nawawi and Syafiqa Haidar Afif Abdul Rahman.
