SRI AMAN: SK Melugu has been transformed with the completion of a RM7.5-million academic block and hostel under the RM1-billion Phase 1 Sarawak Dilapidated School Redevelopment Programme, providing students with improved learning and boarding facilities.
Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, said the project involved the construction of a modern academic block as well as a hostel capable of accommodating 50 male and 50 female students.
He said the project, undertaken by Awene Era Warisan, commenced on March 13, 2020, and was fully completed on July 30, 2022, at a total cost of RM7.5 million.
“The new facilities provide students with a more conducive, safe and comfortable learning environment, thereby enhancing the quality of teaching and learning while supporting human capital development in rural areas,” he said.
He said this at the official opening ceremony of the Sarawak Dilapidated School Redevelopment Project funded under the RM1-billion allocation at SK Melugu here on Friday (Jul 31).
Sagah said the implementation of the project reflected the continued commitment of both the Federal Government and the Sarawak Government to ensure that students in rural areas enjoy educational facilities on par with those available to students in urban areas.
However, he stressed that educational transformation should not rely solely on the provision of infrastructure, but must also be supported by a high-quality education system, skilled educators and a learning environment capable of producing knowledgeable, competitive and future-ready generations.
SK Melugu currently has 249 students, including preschool pupils, 26 teachers and eight members of the support staff.
