KUCHING: Sarawak is steadily positioning itself as a recognised regional sporting destination through sustained investments in sports infrastructure, talent development and international events.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state government continues to invest in modern sporting facilities while nurturing athletes and organising competitions at various levels as part of Sarawak’s broader development agenda.
“Hosting the Gemaputera Games reflects Sarawak’s commitment to developing an internationally recognised sporting ecosystem. The state government continues to invest in modern sporting facilities, talent development and the organisation of sporting events at various levels as part of the state’s development agenda,” he said.
His speech was read out by Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, DBKU and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi when officiating the closing ceremony of the 18th Gemaputera Games Sarawak 2026 at Wisma Melayu here last night (Aug 1).
Abang Johari said Sarawak is preparing to play a significant role in the upcoming SEA Games in September next year, where it will serve as the main host cluster for the regional sporting event.
He said Sarawak will host more sporting events than any other state in Malaysia during the Games, describing the achievement as the result of years of careful planning and sustained investment.
“Sarawak will become the host of more sporting events than any other state in Malaysia. This has not happened by chance as it is the result of long-term planning, consistent investment and confidence in the capabilities of the people of Sarawak,” he said.
Abang Johari pointed out that every sporting event organised today serves as preparation for larger international competitions in the future.
He said sports development forms part of Sarawak’s wider aspiration of becoming a progressive, competitive and sustainable region, alongside advancements in the economy, renewable energy, the digital economy and technological innovation.
“Every event we organise today prepares us for tomorrow. Every athlete we nurture, every volunteer we train and every tournament we host brings Sarawak one step closer to becoming a recognised regional sporting destination,” he said.
Abang Johari said the state’s emphasis on sports aligns with the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which seeks to balance economic growth with human capital development, quality of life and community well-being.
He said sports also play an important role in developing healthy, disciplined and resilient future generations, making investment in the sector an investment in the state’s long-term development.
“Our strategy is not solely focused on driving economic growth and physical development. It also places strong emphasis on human capital development, the well-being of the people and the creation of a united, healthy and resilient society,” he added.
