KUCHING: The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) community in Batu Kitang continues to spread compassion through its monthly vegetarian food distribution programme, serving hundreds of free meal packets to the public.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang said the initiative reflects the community’s dedication to helping those in need despite relying entirely on public donations.
He said the temple, located along Arang Road, has grown from a small house into a larger place of worship and community gathering, where members regularly conduct prayers, meditation and religious activities.
According to Lo, volunteers begin preparing the vegetarian nasi lemak as early as 4 am before distributing the food at about 9am in markets and other public places.
“They cook the food themselves, pack it themselves and distribute it themselves. They live very simply, but they still find enough to share with others,” he said when met during the food distribution programme here today (Aug 2).
Lo said the initiative has been carried out every month for as long as he has served the Batu Kitang constituency and has expanded significantly over the years.
The programme saw about 500 packets of vegetarian nasi lemak distributed, while the temple plans to prepare 1,000 packets for next month’s distribution.
He described the programme as a meaningful community effort that promotes kindness, generosity and social responsibility.
Lo also encouraged more people to participate in similar community initiatives, saying collective efforts could help build a more caring and compassionate society.
“If this small community can do it, imagine what we can achieve if everyone contributes. Together, we can make Sarawak and even the world a better place,” he said.
