Mother, disabled daughter get out before flames take hold

KUCHING: Disaster was narrowly averted when a mother safely led her daughter with disabilities out of their burning house moments before fire engulfed much of the ground floor in Taman Satria Jaya BDC here today.

The pair, aged 66 and 38, escaped without injuries before the fire spread, sparing them from what could have been a far more serious tragedy.

The Fire and Rescue Department said firefighters from Tabuan Jaya and Batu Lintang stations were dispatched to the scene following an emergency call at 12:49 pm.

Upon arrival, they found the double-storey house on fire with 50 per cent of the ground floor consumed by flames.

A neighbouring house sustained minor damage, about five per cent of the structure affected by heat and smoke.

The extinguishing work was performed using water sourced from a nearby fire hydrant, bringing the fire under control.

Overhaul works followed to ensure that there were no risk of reignition.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred are yet to be determined.
