KUCHING: Sarawak’s promising rhythmic gymnasts showcased their potential at the JanjiAI Petrina Cup 2026, with the squad securing multiple podium finishes in the prestigious international tournament held at Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.
The third edition of the Malaysia Rhythmic Gymnastics International Tournament, held from July 28 to August 1 at Gymnasium 2, National Sports Council, saw Sarawak’s young talents competing against a strong field of athletes.
Leading the medal charge was Shirley Chia Xin Shuen, who delivered an outstanding performance in the Under-14A category by clinching the silver medal in the individual all-around event.
Shirley also secured silver in the ball event, while adding fourth-place finishes in the hoop and clubs disciplines.
Her teammate, Clarissa Makena Ambok Joseph Chaong, also impressed in the same category, finishing fourth in the ball event and fifth in both hoop and clubs.
In the Under-15A category, Nichelle Kung Tze Xuan continued Sarawak’s medal momentum by collecting three bronze medals in hoop, clubs and ribbon, as well as a bronze medal in the individual all-around event.
Meanwhile, Lyna Kho Li Xiang contributed two silver medals for Sarawak in the Under-14B category after finishing second in both the ball and ribbon events.
The younger athletes also showed encouraging performances, with Eliza Toh Ryui Ya recording top-six finishes in the Under-12A category, placing sixth in ball, fifth in clubs and fourth in ribbon.
The results highlighted the continued progress of Sarawak’s rhythmic gymnastics programme, with the young athletes gaining valuable exposure against international competitors ahead of future major competitions.
