KUCHING: The experience gained from competing against international opponents will prove invaluable for Sarawak’s rhythmic gymnastics squad ahead of the Malaysia Games (SUKMA), says Sarawak Amateur Gymnastics Association’s (SAGYMA) President, Johnny Tan Seng Hock.
Tan said the JanjiAI Petrina Cup 2026 – 3rd Malaysia Rhythmic Gymnastics International Tournament provided an important platform for Sarawak’s athletes, coaches and officials to gain valuable exposure against strong competitors from across the region.
The tournament, held at Gymnasium 2, National Sports Council, Bukit Jalil from July 28 to August 1, featured participation from teams within Malaysia as well as international contingents from Thailand, Singapore, China and Japan.
“I am very proud of the achievements and participation of the Sarawak gymnastics contingent this time.
“Participating in an international-level tournament like this provides invaluable experience and positive exposure for our athletes, coaches and officials,”said Tan to Sarawak Tribune today.
Tan added that the competition also served as an important evaluation platform to assess the team’s performance level and strengthen preparations ahead of SUKMA.
“Hopefully, the experience, knowledge and exposure gained can be translated into excellent performances and produce proud results for Sarawak at SUKMA later,” he said.
The Sarawak contingent delivered an encouraging performance at the tournament, securing multiple podium finishes, including silver and bronze medals, alongside several top-five placings.
Among the standout performers were Shirley Chia Xin Shuen, who won silver medals in the individual all-around and ball event in the Under-14A category, and Nichelle Kung Tze Xuan, who claimed four bronze medals in the Under-15A category.
Tan also expressed his appreciation to the Sarawak team manager, coaches and judges for their commitment and dedication in ensuring the team’s participation was carried out smoothly.
“Their commitment, dedication and unwavering efforts played an important role in the team’s successful participation,” he said.
