KUCHING: Sarawak hosted a high-level consultation on proposed reforms to Malaysia’s contract law, with delegates paying a courtesy call on Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar at Astana Sarawak on Monday night (Aug 3).
According to Wan Junaidi’s official Facebook page, the courtesy call was held in conjunction with a gathering of judges, legal experts, academics and government officials to discuss improvements to the country’s contract law framework.
Accompanied by Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, Wan Junaidi exchanged views with the delegation on the proposed reforms, particularly from Sarawak’s perspective and needs.
The discussions also focused on ensuring the country’s contract law framework remains relevant and responsive to current developments, while taking into account the interests of all stakeholders.
The delegation comprised members of the judiciary, legal experts, government officials and academics involved in the engagement session.
Among them were Federal Court judge Datuk Seri Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera, Court of Appeal judges Datuk Wong Kian Kheong and Datuk Azizul Azmi Adnan, and Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) president who is also former Federal Court judge Datuk Mary Lim Thiam Suan.
Also present were Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department (BHEUU) Policy and Research director Kevin Geh Kien Meng, deputy director Dr Suharmi Ismail, members of the Committee for the Review and Reform of Contract Law in Malaysia (CRRCL), representatives from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) and Taylor’s University, as well as senior legal practitioners.
The courtesy call ended with a dinner, providing an opportunity for Wan Junaidi and the delegation to strengthen ties and cooperation.
Wan Junaidi and Fauziah also expressed appreciation to the delegation, hoping the discussion would contribute to efforts to strengthen Malaysia’s legal framework through more inclusive and forward-looking laws.
