KUCHING: Representatives from 40 UNESCO Cities of Gastronomy from around the world are in town for the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) Cities of Gastronomy Annual Meeting which Kuching is hosting for the first time.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg described the occasion as another milestone for Sarawak following Kuching’s designation as Malaysia’s first UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2021.
“For the very first time, Kuching and Sarawak have the privilege of hosting the UNESCO Creative Cities Network Cities of Gastronomy Annual Meeting. We thank you for your confidence,” he said at the opening ceremony on Tuesday (Aug 4).
Abang Johari said the annual gathering transforms Kuching into an international platform where cities can exchange ideas, experiences and best practices in using gastronomy to drive sustainable urban development.
He pointed out that although participating cities come from different countries, cultures and traditions, they share a common appreciation that gastronomy extends beyond food itself.
“Food not only represents our identity. It also represents our heritage, our creativity and our collective future,” he said.
Abang Johari welcomed delegates to Sarawak and expressed hope that they would experience not only the richness of the state’s cuisine but also the warmth, diversity and hospitality of its people.
“We are truly honoured that you have chosen to gather here in Sarawak. We hope that during your stay, you will experience not only the richness of our cuisine, but also the warmth, diversity and hospitality of our people,” he said.
The annual meeting brings together UNESCO Cities of Gastronomy to strengthen collaboration, exchange knowledge and explore how gastronomy can contribute to more creative, resilient and sustainable cities.
The meeting is held under the theme “Rooted in Heritage, Growing the Future: Gastronomy as a Catalyst for Creative and Sustainable Cities.”
