KUCHING: Palliative care has received some welcome help from the New Century Lions Club of Kuching Emerald.
The club donated 10 syringe drivers to Sarawak General Hospital’s (SGH) Palliative Care Unit and also made a cash contribution to the Kuching Life Care Society.
The club said the medical equipment and cash brought the total value of its contribution to RM38,000.
The donations were presented at the Kuching Life Care Society Hospice and Palliative Centre in Desa Wira.
According to the club, SGH’s Palliative Care Unit relocated to the centre in April under a collaboration combining the hospital’s clinical services with community support provided by the society.
Syringe drivers administer controlled and continuous doses of medication. In palliative care, the devices are used to manage pain and other symptoms.
Project organising chairperson Kon Chin Wen said the collaboration showed the role healthcare professionals, non-governmental organisations and community members could play in supporting patients and their families.
She called on individuals, organisations and corporate partners to support palliative care services.
Lions Clubs International District 308-A2 Governor Datuk Jimmy Tie said he hoped more Lions clubs in Sarawak, Sabah and Brunei would undertake palliative care projects with healthcare providers and community organisations.
The ceremony was witnessed by Kuching Life Care Society chairman Hung Sung Huo, SGH Palliative Care Unit head Dr Sharon Choo, SGH director Dr Ngian Hie Ung and representatives of Lions Clubs International District 308-A2 and the New Century Lions Club of Kuching Emerald.
