KUCHING: Motorists can expect widespread road closures and traffic diversions across the city this weekend as police prepare for the Sarawak Energy Marathon 2026.
Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said phased traffic closures involving 31 locations will be enforced from Aug 8 until the morning of Aug 9 to ensure the safety of participants and the smooth running of the annual event.
The first phase will be implemented from 8am on Aug 8 until 10am on Aug 9, covering roads around the Sarawak Energy headquarters and Jalan Isthmus.
The second phase, involving more extensive closures across the city centre, will take effect from 12am to 8am on Aug 9.
Roads affected include Jalan Pelabuhan, Jalan Datuk Merican Salleh, Jalan Pending, Jalan Padungan, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Satok, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, Jalan Kulas, Jalan Astana, Lebuh Temple, Lebuh Wayang, Jalan Main Bazaar, Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yaakob, Jalan Stadium, Jalan Casuarina, Jalan Diplomatik, Jalan Masja, Jalan Hasyim Jaafar, Jalan Merdeka, Jalan Muhibbah, Jalan Haji Mataim, Jalan Ajibah Abol, Jalan Market, Jalan Gambier, Jalan Abell, Jalan Abang Abd Rahim, Lorong Sebor, Jalan Kwong Lee Bank and Jalan Merbau.
Alexson urged motorists to avoid parking on road shoulders as it could block emergency access and aggravate traffic congestion.
He advised members of the public to plan their journeys in advance, use alternative routes and cooperate with police officers and traffic personnel stationed along the affected roads.
