TOKYO, Japan: Nintendo today reported sharply higher first-quarter operating profit, helped by one-off gains including United States (US) tariff refunds, even as sales declined, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
The Japanese video game maker said operating profit more than doubled to 142.6 billion yen (USD903 million) from 56.9 billion yen (USD361 million) a year earlier.
The increase was driven by a greater share of higher-margin software sales and refunds of US tariffs that had previously been recorded as costs.
Net profit attributable to shareholders rose to 147.4 billion yen (USD935 million) from 96.0 billion yen (USD609 million) a year earlier.
Ordinary profit, which includes investment and financial income, climbed to 206.2 billion yen (USD1.31 billion) from 95.8 billion yen (USD608 million), boosted by gains from equity investments, foreign exchange and interest income.
Net sales, however, fell 9.5 per cent to 517.8 billion yen (USD3.28 billion).
Looking ahead, Nintendo maintained its outlook for the financial year ending March 2027, forecasting net sales to rise 11.4 per cent to 2.05 trillion yen (USD12.9 billion) and operating profit to increase 2.7 per cent to 370 billion yen (USD2.35 billion).
The company expects ordinary profit to fall 20.7 per cent to 430 billion yen (USD2.73 billion) and net profit attributable to shareholders to decline 26.9 per cent to 310 billion yen (USD1.97 billion), or 268.90 yen (UD$1.70) per share. – BERNAMA-dpa
