KUCHING: Northern Sarawak has reached a major milestone in strengthening its electricity infrastructure following the successful integration of Limbang into the Sarawak Grid.
It completes the state’s northern transmission network while enhancing electricity supply reliability and supporting future development.
The integration follows the commissioning of the Limbang Town 275kV Extra High Voltage Substation and energisation of the 228-kilometre Bunut-Medamit-Limbang transmission line.
It enables the entire Limbang distribution network to receive electricity directly from the Sarawak Grid.
“The successful integration of Limbang into the Sarawak Grid reflects the Sarawak Government’s continued commitment to ensuring that all Sarawakians have access to reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity supply,” said Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, in a press statement today.
“I commend Sarawak Energy and everyone involved in delivering this project. This achievement is the result of careful planning, strong collaboration and the dedication of all parties in turning this important infrastructure project into reality.”
The project comprises approximately 228 kilometres of 275kV transmission lines supported by 644 transmission towers and monopoles, extending from Bunut through Medamit to the new Limbang Town Extra High Voltage Substation.
Following completion of distribution cable diversion works, the entire Limbang distribution network is now supplied through the Sarawak Grid, while the Limbang Power Station has been placed on standby to provide backup electricity supply whenever required.
“Limbang had previously relied on an isolated diesel-based electricity system. With its connection to the Sarawak Grid, the division now receives electricity from Sarawak’s predominantly hydropower-based generation mix, significantly improving supply reliability and operational flexibility,” said Sarawak Energy Bhd’s Chairman, Datuk Ibrahim Baki.
“The integration also reduces dependence on diesel generation, lowering carbon emissions and improving environmental sustainability while creating greater opportunities to extend reliable electricity supply to rural villages in Batu Danau and Ulu Medamit in the future.”
He said the achievement builds on the successful commissioning of the Lawas 275kV Substation and transmission infrastructure in November 2025, completing Northern Sarawak’s integration into the state’s main transmission network.
He added that the strengthened transmission network also supports the Sarawak-Sabah Interconnection, enabling cross-border electricity exchange and serving as a key building block towards the future Borneo Grid under the ASEAN Power Grid initiative.
Meanwhile, Sarawak Energy Group’s Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, said the fully interconnected northern transmission network provides a stronger platform to support future economic growth and rising electricity demand while ensuring reliable, affordable and sustainable power supply throughout Sarawak.
