KUCHING: Sarawak marked a milestone in neurological rehabilitation with the successful hosting of Malaysia’s first Live LSVT BIG Training and Certification Workshop for Parkinson’s disease rehabilitation here on Jul 17 and 18.
The workshop gathered more than 40 rehabilitation professionals from Sarawak, Malaya, Singapore and the Philippines, reflecting growing regional demand for specialised Parkinson’s disease rehabilitation training.
Organised by the Kuching Parkinson’s Society (KPS) and Laila Stroke Care Centre (LSCC), the programme forms part of KPS’ two-year masterplan to expand access to Parkinson’s disease-specific rehabilitation and care in Sarawak.
The workshop was conducted by LSVT Global, Inc. instructors Laura Guse and Jennifer Tuccitto from the United States, who trained participants in the internationally recognised LSVT BIG approach, an evidence-based treatment designed to improve movement, balance, posture and confidence among people living with Parkinson’s disease.
A practical session involving about 20 Parkinson’s disease (PD) volunteers allowed participants to apply newly acquired techniques under expert supervision while gaining first-hand clinical experience.
Upon completing the certification, participants are expected to introduce internationally recognised rehabilitation techniques at their respective healthcare facilities, improving access to specialised Parkinson’s care in their communities.
KPS said the successful inaugural workshop also strengthens regional collaboration in neurological rehabilitation and expressed hope that it would pave the way for more advanced training programmes and multidisciplinary partnerships across Sarawak and Southeast Asia.
