SIBU: Three local men with various criminal records were arrested after attempting to evade police during almost an hour-long chase in the Sungai Merah area early this morning.
Sibu District Police Chief, ACP Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad, said the three suspects, aged between 28 and 40, were apprehended after the vehicle they were travelling in was intercepted and surrounded at Jalan Lilin, Sungai Merah.
He said the incident began at about 1:30 am when a team from the Sibu District Police Headquarters (IPD) Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) Unit spotted a sedan being driven suspiciously near the Jalan Paradom roundabout.
He said the police ordered the driver to stop by activating the patrol vehicle’s siren for inspection, but the suspects disobeyed the order and sped away.
“The MPV team then sought assistance from other patrol units before the pursuit operations continued.
“After almost an hour, the vehicle was finally stopped and the three suspects were arrested without any untoward incident,” he said.
A search of the vehicle found an iron cutter and an iron nail, which were believed to have been intended for criminal activities.
However, none of the suspects could provide a reasonable explanation for possessing the items.
Police also seized the vehicle and its keys to assist in the investigation.
“Further checks found that the three men, who are from Kuching and Siburan, have various past records involving criminal and drug offences.
“All the suspects were brought to court, and a four-day remand order from Friday until August 11 was approved to allow the investigation to continue,” said Abang Zainal.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code, Section 37 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, and Section 6(1) of the Corrosive Substances, Explosives and Dangerous Weapons Act 1958.
