KUCHING: Sixteen foreigners were detained for various immigration offences following raids at 10 locations here and in Kota Samarahan.

The operations, carried out from 8 pm on Thursday (Aug 6) to 1 am on Friday (Aug 7), saw 51 individuals screened.

The Sarawak Immigration Department said the raids, dubbed Ops Selera, Ops Kutip and Ops Sapu, were conducted following public complaints and intelligence gathering.

The locations included premises suspected of operating online gambling activities, eateries and rented rooms around Jalan Semarak Gita, Bandar Baru Semariang, Matang and Kota Samarahan.

Checks found 16 foreigners suspected of committing offences under Sections 15(1)(c) and 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

The offences involve overstaying and entering or remaining in Malaysia without valid passes or permits.

All detainees were taken to the Immigration office for documentation and further investigation.

The department said enforcement operations would continue throughout Sarawak to detect and curb immigration offences.

Members of the public were also encouraged to provide information on undocumented immigrants or unlawful activities.
