MIRI: Taijiquan Huang could become a new draw for international visitors while strengthening cultural exchange and tourism in Miri.
Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said the International Tai Chi Huang Workshop & Forum 2026 demonstrated the potential of the traditional art to expand internationally.
He said international programmes attracting Taijiquan enthusiasts could generate wider economic benefits for the city, including for accommodation, food, transport, shopping and local cultural experiences.
“Taijiquan brings together three important elements – health, culture and international exchange – and has great potential to contribute to tourism and the city’s economic development,” he said.
Ting, who is also Piasau assemblyman, said this at the closing of the International Tai Chi Huang Workshop & Forum 2026 organised by the Miri Tai Chi Physical Culture Association today (Aug 8).
He said Taijiquan should not be viewed merely as a fitness activity, but also as part of cultural heritage encompassing health, discipline, balance and personal development.
Ting expressed hope that more international Taijiquan forums, training camps and competitions would be organised in Miri in the future.
He said such programmes could encourage more overseas visitors to come to Miri, not only to learn Taijiquan but also to experience the city’s culture, community and attractions.
