KUCHING: Sarawak’s boxing squad has returned from a three-week training stint in Thailand with renewed confidence ahead of the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) Selangor 2026.
Squad manager Datuk Johnny Ting Su King said the intensive camp had provided a valuable benchmark of the boxers’ readiness while exposing them to different training methods and more experienced opponents.
“We are satisfied with the improvement shown by all the boxers.
“The decision to send them to Thailand for three weeks has certainly had a positive impact,” said Johnny when met by Sarawak Tribune upon his arrival with the team at Kuching International Airport last night (Aug 7).
Johnny, who is also the deputy president of the Sarawak Amateur Boxing Association (SABA), said the boxers gained valuable experience and were exposed to various aspects of the sport during their stint in the Land of the White Elephant.
More importantly, he said, their abilities were put to the test through friendly bouts against more experienced boxers in Thailand.
Head coach Mohamad Helman Morni shared Johnny’s assessment, saying the experience and knowledge gained during the three-week stint would prove invaluable to the boxers.
“We hope the boxers will be able to translate everything they gained in Thailand onto the competition stage and, in doing so, realise our medal-winning mission as outlined earlier,” said Helman.
At the 2024 SUKMA hosted by Sarawak, the boxing squad won 11 medals overall — four gold, four silver and three bronze.
