MIRI: An abandoned school staff quarters near Miri was completely destroyed in a fire on Sunday morning (Aug. 8), with no casualties reported.
The non-permanent structure, measuring about 30ft by 20ft, was located at the old quarters of SMK Luar Bandar Miri along the Bintulu-Miri road.
The Fire and Rescue Department received the distress call at 9.31 am, with firefighters arriving at the scene at 10.20 am, after travelling about 62 km from the station.
Firefighters from Batu Niah Fire and Rescue Station, assisted by personnel from Lopeng Fire and Rescue Station, found the building already 100 per cent engulfed by fire.
A single hose line and nozzle were deployed from a fire engine to extinguish the blaze.
Once the fire was brought under control, firefighters carried out overhaul operations to ensure there were no remaining embers or concealed sources of heat that could reignite the structure.
The building had reportedly been unoccupied and abandoned for some time.
A total of 16 firefighters took part in the operations, supported by two Fire and Rescue Tenders, an Emergency Medical Rescue Services vehicle and a Hilux utility vehicle.
The operations were led by PBK II Azlan. No information on the cause of the fire was provided.
