KUCHING: A total of 809 aspiring motorcyclists obtained their B2 driving licences for just RM250 each under a government initiative aimed at making motorcycle licences more affordable for targeted groups.
Tupong assemblyman Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman said the initiative was made possible through close cooperation between the Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak, Tupong Constituency Service Centre and driving institute Cangiran Sdn Bhd.
He said the RM250 fee was significantly lower than the usual cost of obtaining a motorcycle licence, which could range from RM400 to RM700 elsewhere.
“While candidates are paying only a small amount, the actual cost of implementing the programme is much higher. This is why we need to appreciate the efforts of everyone involved,” he said.
He said this when officiating the ‘Majlis Penyerahan Program Bantuan Lesen Memandu Kelas B2 Tahun 2026 Anjuran DUN Tupong’ event at Dewan SUPP Matang, Jalan Sungai Tengah here today (Aug 9).
He added that the initiative also helped raise participants’ awareness of road safety and the importance of complying with traffic laws to prevent accidents and protect the lives of other road users.
“JPJ played an important role in ensuring candidates underwent the necessary training, screening and tests before being issued their licences,” he added.
The programme commenced on April 15, with candidates sitting for the written test on May 16 before proceeding to the practical riding test on July 11.
Fazzrudin said the programme demonstrated the importance of cooperation between government agencies, businesses and community representatives in delivering initiatives that directly benefit the public.
He said the initiative, although simple in nature, had a significant impact on the 809 successful candidates by improving access to legal motorcycle licences while promoting greater awareness of road safety.
