BINTANGOR: A probe into the theft of transformer cables worth about RM15,000 has taken a new turn after three men arrested in connection with the case tested positive for drugs.
The suspects, aged 36, 28 and 22, were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Division at around 11.50 am on Aug 8.
Meradong police chief DSP Tansli Mering said urine screenings conducted following their arrests found all three men positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
“The suspects are currently being detained to facilitate further investigations into the transformer cable theft and the drug offences detected,” he said.
The theft, which occurred in the KJD area here, is believed to have resulted in losses of about RM15,000.
Tansli stated that police are also looking into whether the trio may be linked to a separate criminal intimidation case in Sungai Kawi.
Background checks found that the 36-year-old suspect had no prior criminal or drug-related record, while the other two each had one prior record for drug offences.
The case is being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a maximum fine of RM5,000 or imprisonment for up to two years upon conviction.
He assured that police remain serious about tackling drug abuse, which could potentially contribute to other criminal activities and threaten the safety and wellbeing of the community.
