KUCHING: Firefighters are battling two sprawling forest fires in Sri Aman and Daro, with a combined 125 hectares of land affected by the blazes.
The fire in Daro is the larger of the two, with the blaze at Kampung Kut affecting about 75 hectares.
Firefighters from Daro station have so far managed to bring 10 hectares under control, but 65 hectares remain affected as the operation continued today (Aug 11).
Meanwhile, a separate fire along Jalan Kejatau-Lingga in Sri Aman has affected another 50 hectares.
Firefighters from Sri Aman station have successfully extinguished 20 hectares there, leaving 30 hectares still requiring firefighting efforts.
Both operations, which began on Monday (Aug 10), were resumed yesterday (Aug 11) as firefighters work to contain the fires and prevent them from spreading further.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the situation at both locations is being monitored continuously, with updates on firefighting operations and fire status to be issued from time to time.
Sarawak is currently facing hot and dry weather conditions and transboundary haze, with 11 areas recording unhealthy Air Pollution Index (API) readings as at 2 pm yesterday (Aug 11).
Based on the Air Pollution Index Management System (APIMS), the areas affected are Serian (190), Samarahan (169), Kuching (165), Bintulu (159), Samalaju (155), Mukah (154), Sibu (154), Sri Aman (154), Sarikei (153), Miri (146), and the Industrial Training Institute (ILP) Miri (123).
