MIRI: A 78-year-old woman was killed after being attacked by a crocodile while she and her son were searching for snails in a tributary connected to Sungai Suai near Suai Bridge in Batu Niah today (Aug 11).
The victim, identified as Sambai Anak Anggah, was in a boat when the crocodile attacked at 11.26 am.
Her son, who was in the river about a metre away, witnessed the attack.
According to the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the crocodile dragged the woman about 10 metres away from the boat before releasing her after villagers gathered and surrounded the area.
Villagers later found the victim floating in the water and brought her to the wharf.
Five firefighters from the Batu Niah Fire and Rescue Station arrived at 11.58 am and monitored the area to ensure it was safe and under control.
The situation was declared under control at 12.33 pm, with the operation ending at 1.45 pm.
The victim’s body was subsequently handed over to the police for further action.
Five personnel from the Royal Malaysia Police were also involved in the operation.
