KUCHING: Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) head SAC Denis Leong warned that every place, no matter how secluded, will be checked for illegal activities, especially illegal gambling.

He said in today’s high-tech world, there was no hiding place for criminals and it was a matter of time before their illegal activities were exposed thus, it was the responsibility of all police chiefs to see to this.

“Unlike the past, where police have to travel long and far to collect evidence, all information is now at the finger tips as it just takes one good citizen to snap a photo of an illegal activity and send it to the right person for action to be taken.”

SAC Leong, who has cleaned up a lot of illegal gambling in cities and major towns since he took over in mid-2018, said he would never let his guard down where illegal gaming was concerned. He expressed his concerns that through illegal gambling, it would lead to more serious and violent crimes.

“Getting addicted to gambling will also cause break-ups in families and if a youngster is affected, there goes his future,” he said when contacted by New Sarawak Tribune.

In an operation, SAC Leong said one male and 10 females aged between 18 and 45 were arrested in Betong bazaar for selling illegal 4D.

A police team raided seven locations on April 13 and nabbed the suspects and confiscated gadgets used for operating the illegal 4D. Seized were 10 mobile phones, printers, and RM3,476.

The locations raided comprised of trading companies and one operating under a canopy in broad daylight.

It is believed that members of the public had complained that many small districts were infested with illegal gambling and other activities such as drug peddling.
