HYDERABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari highlighted the country’s role in regional peace and diplomacy in their August 14 Independence Day messages.
Zardari said a country that can defend itself must also use its strength to prevent conflict and protect peace.
“Pakistan’s role in the efforts to facilitate dialogue in the region is an important example of this responsibility. Pakistan has effectively used its channels of communication, its geographical location and diplomatic capital to encourage dialogue and de-escalation at a time when wider conflict could have serious consequences for the region and the world,” Zardari added in reference to West Asia, but did not specifically mention the Iran-US war.
The president said Pakistan would continue to support efforts that reduce tensions, protect regional stability and create conditions for cooperation.
“Pakistan’s approach is clear. We believe that disputes, no matter how serious, must ultimately be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy. Our security is linked to the peace and stability of our neighbourhood and the world at large,” he said.
Shehbaz, in his message, also emphasised Pakistan’s role in regional stability and the landmark tripartite Mecca Joint Defence Agreement signed on August 7.
“Today, Pakistan is acclaimed in the comity of nations as a strong, resolute and dignified country and a powerful advocate of peace. Amid the complex and challenging regional situation, Pakistan has played a constructive role as a responsible nation and as a stabilising force in promoting global peace, stability and regional cooperation,” the prime minister said.
He said the mutual defence pact involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye is a testament to the country’s “effective role in the region and its emerging strategic strength”. – BERNAMA
