KUCHING: Sarawak has received RM12.53 million in between 2021 and 2026 under the Road Accident Management System (RAMS) programme.
Works Minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, said the funding was channelled by the federal government for road safety works across the state.
Of the total, RM6.275 million was allocated for accident prone areas or ‘blackspots’ treatment works.
“Another RM5.854 million went towards new street lighting installations. The remaining RM400,000 was set aside for signalised pedestrian crossings,” he said in his speech at the programme at UCSI Hotel here.
RAMS was developed under the Ministry of Works’ ‘MyJalan’ initiative to manage, analyse and display road accident data systematically, with integration of accident data from Integrated Police Reporting System (i-PRS) under the Royal Malaysia Police.
Blackspots are identified based on a set of criteria: three accidents of the same type, or five accidents of varying types, within a three-year period.
The assessment covers a 50-metre radius or a 100-metre stretch of road.
Nationally, the government allocated RM80 million in 2026 for treatment works covering 99 identified blackspots, Nanta said.
The fund also covers repairs for 334 new street lights, 14 traffic light junctions, and the construction of 19 signalised pedestrian crossings under the programme, he added.
