SELANGOR: Sara Tham has never had to look far for support, with her parents following her sporting journey every step of the way as she prepares to lead Sarawak into the women’s water polo final at the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA).
Kenny Tham and his wife, Anthea Yeo, have been constant figures throughout Sara’s career, rarely missing a competition whenever she represents Sarawak.
Their unwavering support has continued throughout this SUKMA campaign, with the couple following every match at the Darul Ehsan Aquatic Centre as Sarawak marched into the gold medal match unbeaten.
The Sarawak women opened with an 18-11 victory over Penang before defeating Federal Territories 19-6 and edging hosts Selangor 10-9 in one of the tournament’s most thrilling matches.
They sealed top spot with a convincing 20-11 win over Negeri Sembilan to book their place in Monday’s (Aug 17) final.
For Kenny, seeing his daughter not only represent Sarawak but captain the side into the final has been one of his proudest moments.
“Of course I’m proud. First, she’s going to the SUKMA final and she’s also the team captain for Sarawak. She carries a huge responsibility to lead the team there. Of course, I’m very proud,” he told Sarawak Tribune.
Kenny said he and Anthea have always made it a priority to be present whenever Sara competes, whether at the SEA Games or other major tournaments.
For this SUKMA, both even took leave from work so they would not miss a single match.
“We never miss,” he said with a smile when asked if they had followed every game.
Watching Sara wear Sarawak colours has always been special, he said, but seeing her entrusted with the captaincy has made this campaign even more meaningful.
“Of course, I’m very proud that she can represent Sarawak and also captain the team. It’s something very special for us,” he said.
With the final now awaiting, Kenny and Anthea will once again take their place in the stands, hoping to witness Sara lead Sarawak to SUKMA gold.
