SELANGOR: Young Sarawak boxer, Azriq Syakirin became the first from the state’s boxing squad to book a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) XXII.
Azriq advanced after overcoming Pahang’s Muhamad Arif in the men’s 51kg category at Tun Abdullah Mohamad Salleh Hall, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), here today.
In a closely fought bout, Azriq secured a narrow 28-27 victory after three rounds.
“It is a good start for Azriq after managing to overcome his opponent.
“However, there are still weaknesses in various aspects of his performance that need to be improved,” Sarawak head coach Muhammad Helman Morni told Sarawak Tribune after the bout.
Team manager Datuk Johnny Ting Su King was also pleased with Azriq’s victory, expressing hope that the win would provide a boost of confidence and inspiration to his teammates ahead of their respective bouts.
The win gives Azriq a timely confidence boost as he looks to build on his strong start.
