SELANGOR: Nigel Agas may not have walked away with a successful clean and jerk at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) Selangor 2026, but the Sarawak lifter left the platform having pushed himself into territory he had never reached before.
Competing at his second SUKMA, the 20 year old successfully lifted his 100 kilogrammes (kg) personal best in the snatch on his second attempt after failing to register it on his opening lift during the Men’s 60kg category.
He then attempted 106kg on his third attempt but was unable to complete the lift during the weightlifting event at Dewan Seri Cenpaka MPKJ, today.
The clean and jerk proved an even bigger challenge, with Nigel opening at 126kg ; 3kg above his previous personal best of 123kg.
He was unable to complete any of his three clean-and-jerk attempts, but said he remained calm and composed throughout the competition.
“The third attempt with 106kg was something I never lifted (snatch) before. I knew it will happen, I just did not expect myself to fail,” he told Sarawak Tribune.
Despite the unsuccessful attempts, coach Jonathan Patrick was pleased with Nigel’s composure and technique throughout the competition.
“He gave all he had and did all he could. Although not many of his attempts were successful, I am proud of his commitment to training and his performance today,” he said.
Jonathan said Nigel had also shown good technique and composure despite being unable to lift beyond his personal best.
For Nigel, the competition provided another benchmark in his development, with the 126kg opening weight representing a new challenge in the clean and jerk.
While the numbers did not all go his way, the Sarawak lifter leaves his second SUKMA having tested limits he had never previously attempted.
