KUCHING: Five months of relentless preparation culminated in a historic breakthrough as Sarawak’s rhythmic gymnastics team ended the state’s 20-year wait for a medal in the women’s team event at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA).
Nichelle Kung Tze Xuan, Eliza Toh Ryui Ya, Clarissa Makena Ambok Joseph Chaong and Shirley Chia Xin Shuen amassed 170.950 points to claim bronze at SUKMA XXII Selangor 2026, delivering Sarawak’s first team-event medal in two decades while achieving the target set before the Games.
Head coach Angelina Zorina said the result was a reward for the gymnasts’ commitment despite having just five months to prepare.
“The team worked really hard for around five months, and I truly believed in them.
“The girls gave their maximum, and we are really happy with the result,” she said when the team returned to Kuching on Sunday (Aug 16).
The quartet dedicated the milestone to everyone who stood behind them throughout their journey.
“We thank our coaches, Team Sarawak, our parents and friends for guiding and supporting us throughout this competition,” they said.
