KUCHING: Sarawak is already looking beyond its historic SUKMA breakthrough, with plans to field a rhythmic gymnastics group exercise team at the 2028 Malaysia Games.
Team manager, Salfa Kamazura Abdul Kadir, said the next step is to broaden the state’s talent pool while preparing enough gymnasts to compete in the group event.
“After this, we are planning to prepare more gymnasts for 2028, and we are also looking at forming a group exercise team,” she said upon the squad’s return to Kuching on Sunday (Aug 16) today.
The plans come after Sarawak ended a 20-year wait for a rhythmic gymnastics team-event medal, claiming bronze at SUKMA XXII Selangor 2026 after just five months of preparation.
Salfa described the achievement as a collective success involving the gymnasts, coaches and supporting organisations.
She credited the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS), Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) and the Sarawak Gymnastics Association (Saragymba) for helping the team achieve its target.
“The coaches only had five months to prepare the gymnasts, which was a very short period, but they made it.
“Everyone did a good job, and the support throughout our preparations helped both the gymnasts and coaches,” she said.
