KAPIT: The Kapit Division can become one of Sarawak’s inland agrofood and food production hubs through expanded agricultural areas and stronger supply chains.

Minister of Works and Member of Parliament for Kapit Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the potential includes developing 394 hectares of paddy cultivation areas in Sungai Tunoh, Bukit Mabong and Nanga Merit.

He highlighted the proposed development of the Kapit Agrofood Terminal which would strengthen the supply chain from production and collection to processing and marketing.

“The approach must shift from selling raw produce to selling value-added products through processing, packaging, branding, and marketing,” he said during the Kapit Agrofest 2026 closing ceremony at the Kapit Town Square yesterday.

He also encouraged young people to view agriculture as a future economic sector by embracing automation, drones, e-commerce and artificial intelligence.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Native Laws and Customs) Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat said Kapit Agrofest provided a platform for the Department of Agriculture and related agencies to engage more closely with the community while promoting the adoption of modern agricultural technology.

The three-day Agrofest featured 35 exhibition booths and 17 sales stalls, providing farmers, livestock breeders, fishermen and agro-entrepreneurs with opportunities to showcase their products and exchange knowledge.

Four agro-entrepreneurs from Kapit Division were also recognised in the Crops, Inland Fisheries, Agro-Based Industry and Livestock categories, with the recipients recording annual sales of up to RM92,985.

The Kapit Agrofest 2026 themed ‘Innovating Agriculture for Food Security’ , which ran from August 14 to 16, was organised by the Department of Agriculture Sarawak.
