SELANGOR: Sarawak’s women’s sepak takraw team missed out on a place in the team event semi-finals after losing 2-0 to Sabah at the MBSJ Arena in Puchong today (Aug 17).
The result means Fathan Akhbar’s side will now turn their attention to the bronze medal playoff tomorrow (Aug 18).
In the clash between the two neighbouring Borneo states, both Sarawak regus struggled to match Sabah’s strength.
Sarawak’s Regu A, comprising Nurhaziyatul Qaseh (tekong), Victoria Dibah (left feeder) and Jeremiah Josiah (right feeder), lost 15-4, 17-15.
Regu B, featuring Helvy Natalia (tekong), Vyalitsana Lada (left feeder) and Anisclen Sophilia Siam (right feeder), then suffered a 15-6, 15-2 defeat.
“We accept defeat. The players gave their best, but unfortunately, things did not go Sarawak’s way,” Fathan told the Sarawak Tribune.
However, he hoped the semi-final setback would not dampen the players’ spirits ahead of the bronze medal playoff.
Fathan said all players were in good condition and ready for the crucial match tomorrow.
“None of the players are injured and all of them are in good condition and fully prepared.
“I hope they can stay focused and carry out their duties well,” he said.
He added that Sarawak would face either Selangor or Perak in the bronze medal playoff tomorrow.
