OSLO: King Harald V of Norway has been admitted to hospital following a medical examination, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
The 89-year-old monarch has been treated with cortisone in recent weeks for haemolytic anaemia — a form of anaemia — the Norwegian Royal Court said in a statement on Monday. “This has led to fluid accumulation in the body that requires treatment in hospital.
The king is on sick leave for two weeks. During this time, Crown Prince Haakon will act as regent, it was stated.
Harald has been battling ill health for some time. As recently as February, he was hospitalised while on holiday in Tenerife due to an infection. In March 2024, he had a pacemaker fitted after falling ill while on vacation in Malaysia.
The health of other members of the Norwegian royal family has also been a cause for concern recently.
Queen Sonja was admitted to hospital in May following heart problems. The king’s sister, Princess Astrid, also has a weak heart. Crown Princess Mette-Marit suffers from a chronic pulmonary fibrosis and received a lung transplant in June.
