Miri students shine at World Scholar’s Cup in Shanghai

MIRI: Eleven students here have delivered an outstanding performance at the World Scholar’s Cup (WSC) Shanghai Global Round 2026, returning with an impressive haul of 62 gold and 36 silver medals.

The effort qualified them for the prestigious Tournament of Champions at Yale University in November.

The students, representing several schools here under the leadership and coaching of Champs Education, competed against about 2,000 scholars from 30 countries during the global round held in Shanghai from Aug 4-14.

The students had earlier earned its place at the global round through the WSC Singapore Regional Round.

In Shanghai, the students competed in four core disciplines: Team Debate, Collaborative Writing, Scholar’s Bowl and Scholar’s Challenge, testing their academic knowledge, critical thinking, teamwork and communication skills against international competitors.

The strongest performance came from Super Junior Team 479, which secured the seventh Overall Team Trophy, placing Miri among the top-performing teams at the global competition.

The team also finished fourth in Team Scholar’s Challenge, 12th in Team Bowl and 23rd in Team Debate.

Among the individual performers, Joshua Lim Jia Soon, of Sekolah Menengah Sri Knewton, emerged as the 19th Overall Scholar, collecting 10 golds and two silvers.

He secured gold trophies for finishing second in Art and Music, 10th in Scholar’s Challenge, 11th in Literature and 14th in Special Area.

His teammate Candace Ling Shi En, of Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang, was ranked 26th Overall Scholar, with seven golds and two silvers, including strong results in History and Debate.

Jerome Lim Jia Rong, of Sekolah Menengah Sri Knewton, also made his mark by finishing 50th Overall Scholar with seven golds and five silvers. He claimed first place in History.

Super Junior Team 478 also produced a strong showing, taking the 20th Overall Team Trophy, while placing sixth in Team Scholar’s Challenge, 27th in Team Bowl and 29th in Team Writing.

Cherisse Ling Shi Hyun, of SK St Joseph, led the team’s individual results, finishing 36th Overall Scholar with seven golds and five silvers. She was placed ninth in Art and Music and fifth in History.

Abbygail Kong Jia Chee, of SJK(C) Chung Hua Miri, earned six golds and five silvers to finish 100th Overall Scholar, with notable results in Literature and Science.

Her teammate Evangeline Voon Zi Yue, of Sekolah Sri Knewton, secured fourth place in Science with four golds and five silvers.

Another standout was Nathan Wong Sie-En, of Riam Hill Secondary School, who emerged as the delegation’s best-performing individual scholar, finishing eighth Overall Scholar.

He collected six golds and four silvers and achieved third place in History, ninth in Art and Music, 16th in Scholar’s Challenge and 17th in Science.

Andrea Liew Kah Sin, of Sekolah Menengah Pei Min, contributed to Super Junior Team 480’s performance across the debate and academic challenges, earning two golds and three silvers alongside teammate Dylan Charles of Nova Pioneer Tatu Boys School in Kenya.

In the Senior division, Team 788 also held its own against strong international competition, finishing 18th in Team Debate.

The team’s senior scholars included Constanz Renee Lim and Valencia Lai Yu Tong, both from Sekolah Menengah Pei Min, who contributed to the delegation’s overall medal tally.

Their qualification for the Tournament of Champions at Yale University in November now sets the stage for the next challenge, where the Miri delegation will compete alongside some of the world’s top-performing WSC scholars.
