MIRI: Police issued 80 summonses for various traffic offences after checking 59 vehicles during a five-hour operation targeting road hooliganism in and around the city.

The operation ran from 5pm to 10pm yesterday and covered several locations, including Miri city centre, Taman Tunku, Jalan Taman Tunku and Jalan Taman Jelita.

Miri district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said 67 people, including five women, were checked during the operation.

Police also inspected 58 motorcycles and one car.

The 80 summonses were issued for various offences detected during the checks and may involve multiple offences arising from the vehicles or individuals inspected.

The figure therefore does not represent 80 separate offenders.

Among the offences detected were riding without a driving licence, illegal structural modifications to motorcycles, modified exhaust systems producing excessive noise, missing side mirrors and registration numbers, as well as the use of fancy registration plates.

Police also took enforcement action over other technical offences involving vehicle compliance.

ACP Mohd Farhan said the operation was aimed at preventing road hooliganism and activities that could disrupt traffic flow, endanger other road users and disturb public order.

He appealed to the public with information on suspected road-hooliganism activities to contact the Miri district police headquarters or the nearest police station for further action.
