KUCHING: The establishment of a Technology and Innovation Support Centre (TISC) at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus will help bridge the gap between academic research and commercialisation, said Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) Director-General, Yusnieza Syarmila Yusoff.
She said the centre would serve not only as an information resource hub but also as an important platform to support researchers and students in protecting and commercialising their intellectual property (IP).
“Through this platform, researchers and students can now conduct patent searches and in-depth patentability analysis at the early stages of their research.
“This not only prevents duplication of research but also maximises the economic value of the intellectual property produced,” she said.
She said the establishment of the TISC would provide Swinburne Sarawak’s academic community with direct access to global patent databases and IP commercialisation advisory services.
Swinburne Sarawak has officially become the 27th member of the national TISC network, coordinated by MyIPO under the framework of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between MyIPO and the university here today.
The MoU was signed by Yusnieza and Swinburne Sarawak’s Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Lau Hieng Ho.
Yusnieza said the collaboration reflected MyIPO’s efforts to expand the national innovation support network while strengthening IP awareness and commercialisation among researchers and students.
In 2025, Swinburne Sarawak ranked eighth among private universities with the highest number of patent filings with MyIPO, while 38 copyright applications were filed between 2025 and 2026.
The event also featured a knowledge-sharing session titled ‘Unlocking Commercial Value: Integrating Patent Drafting Excellence with Broader IP Rights’, delivered by MyIPO Intellectual Property Academy’s Assistant Director, Sofea Rehan Ramli.
The session covered patent drafting techniques and comprehensive IP protection strategies aimed at helping local innovations enter international markets and attract high-value investments.
