SELANGOR: Sarawak’s weightlifting squad is setting its sights on a stronger campaign at the next Malaysia Games (SUKMA), with a target of five gold medals and new Games records in 2028.

The target comes after a promising showing at the current SUKMA Selangor edition, where the team has secured two silver medals and one bronze between Aug 17 and 18.

Sarawak weightlifting coach Jonathan Patrick said the lifters’ current form had given him confidence that the squad could make significant progress over the next two years.

Jonathan expresses confidence in Sarawak’s weightlifting squad ahead of SUKMA 2028.

“All I can say is that if the team keeps on going like this, I am strongly confident in what I foresee.

“Five gold medals and some records will be broken,” he told Sarawak Tribune when met at Dewan Seri Cempaka MPKJ on Tuesday (Aug 18).

Jonathan said the focus would now be on maintaining the squad’s development and building on the experience gained in Selangor ahead of the 2028 edition.

With two years to prepare, he believes sustained training and development could turn the ambitious target into reality.
