KUCHING: A 20-year-old man, who pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt to another man with a baseball bat, has been ordered to perform 100 hours of community service over one year.

Magistrate Leona Dominic Mojiliu imposed the sentence on Wednesday (Aug 19) after reviewing the accused’s social report presented by the Social Welfare Department.

The accused had earlier pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum 10-year jail term, or a fine or whipping, or any two of the punishments upon conviction.

The court heard that the incident occurred at about 9.39pm on May 30, 2025, at an eatery near Jalan Song, here.

Based on the facts of the case, the victim was having a drink at the eatery when he was attacked by the accused using a baseball bat, a metal object and a sharp object.

The assault left the victim with eight stitches to his head and six stitches to his right arm.

Investigations found that the incident stemmed from the accused’s dissatisfaction with the victim’s friend, who had allegedly mocked an unflattering photograph of a woman.

The assault was also captured on the cafe’s CCTV recording.

The accused was among six individuals implicated in the case.

Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Fauzulutfi Suriani appeared for the prosecution. The accused were unrepresented.

Meanwhile, pre-trial case management for the remaining five accused has been fixed for Aug 20.
